THE #SELFIE TWEET THAT MADE ELLEN MORE POPULAR THAN OBAMA

Moments before “12 Years a Slave” won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday night, making it a landmark win as this is the first time Hollywood awarded its top honour to the work of a black director (a victory long deferred really), the Oscars made another history. Well, at least Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars did. A kind of social media milestone that broke another social media milestone set by no other than the head of the free world – the United States of America’s President Barack Obama. It’s all about THE #SELFIE TWEET THAT MADE ELLEN MORE POPULAR THAN OBAMA

At  2,804,807 Retweets and 1,464,385 Favorites (as of press time), it was the #SELFIE that took Twitter down momentarily, as well as Obama’s most tweeted photo  of all time. What is it you ask? (Living in a no wi-fi cave, much?) It is Ellen’s group #SELFIE taken in the middle of the Academy Awards ceremony of her, just hanging out with a bunch of friends. Friends who just happen to be Hollywood’s current IT list: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Kevin Spacey (best face ever!), Julia Roberts (big toothy grin, can’t miss that!), Lupita Nyong’o and her brother, Brad Pitt, partly hidden Angelina Jolie and of course, Meryl Streep (seriously!).

THE #SELFIE TWEET THAT MADE ELLEN MORE POPULAR THAN OBAMA

Previous record? Obama’s measly and highly unpopular (in comparison) almost 800 thousand plus retweets at 778,801. Why is this such a notable event? Well, this may very well go down as the most tweeted #tweet / #selfie of all time at almost 3 million proving once again the fast and furious power of social media. The Oscar winners may have taken home the golden statues for the night but the biggest winner of the night? SAMSUNG! If each tweet was a dollar, Samsung is laughing its way to the bank getting reimbursement cheque for its advertising dollars!

Now, still doesn’t want to pay good money for a great social media campaign?
